The Boneyard Concept

A Spooky Storytelling Piece: Imagine a grazing board transformed into a miniature boneyard, complete with skeletal remains, eerie "dirt," and a chilling cauldron of treats. This isn't just a platter of food; it's a captivating storytelling piece that invites your guests to embark on a culinary adventure.

Visual Appeal and Key Elements: The visual appeal of a boneyard grazing board is undeniable. The contrasting textures and colours of the various ingredients create a scene that's both eerie and enchanting. A skull centerpiece, covered in prosciutto for a chilling effect, serves as the focal point of the design. Bones, skeletons, cauldrons, shovels, and gravestones add to the spooky atmosphere.

Spooky Decorations: Halloween-themed decorations, including spiders, cobwebs, and miniature skeletons.

Miranda White's Role: Miranda's creative vision was instrumental in bringing the boneyard concept to life. She created the initial mood board, providing the blueprint for the design and inspiring the selection of ingredients and decorations. Her attention to detail and passion for creating ensured that the boneyard grazing board would be a truly unforgettable centrepiece.

Choosing the Right Board

A Sturdy and Visually Appealing Base: The size and shape of your board will play a significant role in determining the overall appearance of your boneyard grazing board. A larger board will allow for more intricate designs and a greater variety of ingredients. However, a smaller board can be more intimate and easier to manage. Consider the number of guests you're expecting and the desired aesthetic when making your decision.

Board Materials and Our Choice: A sturdy and visually appealing base is essential for a successful boneyard grazing board. The board should be able to support the weight of the ingredients without bending or breaking. Additionally, the board's appearance should complement the spooky theme. A dark-colored board, such as slate or wood, can create a more sinister atmosphere.

Our Board Choice: For our boneyard grazing board, we chose a 13" x 21" board. This provided a large enough canvas for Miranda's vision and allowed us to incorporate a variety of elements without feeling cramped. The board's rectangular shape was ideal for creating a long, winding boneyard landscape.

The Focal Point: A small 5" x 5" riser served as the focal point of our board. This elevated the skull wrapped in prosciutto, making it a standout feature and drawing the eye to the center of the design.

The Spooky Centerpiece: The Prosciutto-Wrapped Skull

  1. Select a small, plastic skull, we found ours at a local dollar store.

  2. Buy a large package of procsuitto..

  3. Carefully wrap the prosciutto strips around the skull, overlapping them to create a tissue-like appearance. Leave the teeth and eye sockets uncovered.

A Floral Touch of Horror: Salami Flowers with Bocconcini Eyeballs

  1. Get a package of salami, Hungarian or your preferred flavour that has been thinly sliced..

  2. Use a shot glass or a container similar in size to form the flower..

  3. Use cocktail boccancini for the whites of the eyeballs and create a small opening in the centre to insert a small green olive or a shelled pistachio.

  4. Place the ‘eyeballs in the salami flower.

  5. Create a bouquet of eyeballs - we used a small plastic coffin to house our bouquet.

Personalization and Spooky Details

  1. Food-safe pens: Use food-safe pens to write messages or inscriptions on the cheese wedges

  2. Berries as entrails: Place berries, such as raspberries or blackberries, around the skeleton to simulate entrails.

  3. Spiders and cobwebs: Add spiders to create a more sinister atmosphere.

  4. Candles and cauldrons: Place small candles or a miniature cauldron filled with treats to enhance the spooky theme.

Curating the Spooktacular Spread

A Spooky Selection of Cheeses and Meats

  • Dark and Moody Cheeses: Espresso cheddar or Guinness cheddar offer a rich, dark flavour that complements the Halloween theme.

  • Classic Choices: Wedge of gouda and brie provide a creamy and indulgent contrast to the darker cheeses and a great place to write your spooky messages.

  • Spooky Shapes: Cut the brie into a coffin shape for an extra creepy touch.

  • Meaty Delights: Pepperoni and garlic sausage add a savoury element to the board.

Halloween-Themed Ingredients

  • Raincoast Crisp Crackers: These crackers with cranberries provide a tangy and festive addition.

  • Dark Chocolate and Nuts: Dark chocolate and nuts offer a sweet and salty balance.

Colour and Variety

A visually appealing boneyard grazing board should incorporate a variety of colours and textures. Dark cheeses and meats can be contrasted with lighter-coloured crackers and fruits. Incorporate ingredients with different shapes and sizes to create a more dynamic and interesting display.
